The City of Nome will host its U-Call We-Haul service next week starting on Tuesday, May 28. Residents will be able to call City Hall to schedule garbage pick up until noon on Friday. The City will also hold its annual Spring Clean Up Day on Saturday to celebrate community members’ week long efforts to keep Nome clean.
Angie Nguyen from the City Manager’s office coordinated the event this year.
“The actual program itself was well established by my predecessors and they’ve done an amazing job of creating, implementing, and sustaining. We see the potential for it to be even bigger and better for the people of Nome.” Nguyen shared via email.
Yellow bags for the clean up event can be picked up all week at City Hall, Nome Recreation Center, Kegoayah Kozga Public Library, and the Public Safety Building. Filled bags can be left at the curb for U-Call We-Haul pickup.
On Saturday only, dump trucks will be located at the Icy View Fire Hall, recycling center across from NAPA, and at the Nome Recreation Center parking lot.
The week will culminate in the Spring Clean Up Day on Saturday where hot dogs, refreshments, and free t-shirts will be available at Old St. Joe’s from noon to 4 p.m. A prize drawing for children’s bicycles will be held shortly after.
Several Nome entities have created their own spring clean up plans in tandem with the city’s efforts. Kawerak will be hosting a two day e-waste collection event to collect items like TV’s, computers, and other electronics. Quality Auto will accept used and old car batteries for proper disposal.
For questions or to schedule a trash pick up time, the City Clerk’s office is taking calls at (907) 443-6663. All items must be brought to the curb and special considerations will be made to accommodate elders and residents with disabilities.
