Eight college students from Western Alaska have been awarded $2,000 scholarships from GCI.
According to a press release, the telecommunications company’s 2018 scholarship program gave a total of $140,000 to 70 students across the state. The money is intended to help with books and tuition costs at trade schools and universities.
The Western Alaska awardees are from Ambler, Emmonak, Kotlik, Kotzebue, Mountain Village, Nome, St. Mary’s, and Unalakleet. They’ll be attending schools including the University of Alaska–Anchorage and the University of Alaska–Fairbanks and as far away as Colorado Christian University, to study subjects ranging from medicine to biology to mechanical engineering.
GCI Chief Human Resources Officer Joe Wahl says the winners were selected from a pool of 600 applicants. He says supporting advanced education is “vital to the development of Alaska’s workforce.”
