The Caleb Lumen Pungowiyi Scholarship program offers 5 thousands dollars per semester for 4 registered tribal members from the Norton Sound, the Northwest Arctic, and the Arctic Slope regions. The scholarship deadline was originally the end of July, but that deadline has been extended to Friday, August 10th.
The scholarship is being awarded in honor of the late Caleb Pungowiyi, a prominent activist for subsistence and native culture. Caleb’s widow, Gladys Pungowiyi, says her late husband was immensely proud when his life’s work was honored in a way that supports subsistence and native culture. She said he helped design the scholarship program before his death.
Kawerak’s Löki Gale Tobin, the scholarship’s project specialist, says that while the scholarship aims to reward students pursuing science and rural development, students who believe their course of study aligns with Caleb’s principles are encouraged to make their case in their application.
