A fourth musher has scratched from Iditarod 38. Kirk Barnum scratched at the Rainy Pass checkpoint at 11:20am (Alaska Time), late Tuesday morning.
Barnum scratched with only twelve dogs: a relatively small team for so early in the race. As Iditarod headquarters confirms, Barnum “said he scratched in the best interest of his team… it was evident that they [his dogs] were tired.”
As of 5:13pm in Alaska, 67 mushers remain on the trail. Six mushers have departed Nikolai; former champion Jeff King left Nikolai in first position.
