Letter From the GM:

Amid growing concern for the environment in Western Alaska and around the world, KNOM reaffirms its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. To this end, KNOM will implement innovative methods to limit its consumption of natural resources:

  • A wind turbine will be installed atop KNOM’s radio tower to supply the station with zero-emission electricity. KNOM is actively recruiting volunteers from within the community to climb the tower with hand-held fans to drive the turbine on days with no wind.
  • KNOM will convert its oil-based heating system to an innovative technology powered by liquid sunshine. The current fuel tank will be replaced before the summer solstice, to maximize liquid sunshine collection on the longest day of the year.
  • Also starting this summer, KNOM will offer donors the option to receive the Static newsletter by carrier pigeon. Not only will this reduce fuel consumption on planes and trucks that carry mail, but also paper consumption, since this will necessitate a special microprinted edition of the Static.

As always, thank you for being part of the KNOM community and for supporting our mission.

April Fools! No volunteers were harmed—or sent up the tower with fans—in the making of this announcement.

– Miranda
