As our Lenten journey continues through March, the Church’s liturgy will regale us with dramatic stories from the life of Jesus. The outcast Samaritan woman at the well who becomes his unlikeliest apostle, the man born blind who receives his sight and worships him, Lazarus returning to life after four days in the tomb: each one a seismic encounter with Christ that instantly changes the participant’s life forever.
In perfect contrast with these tales, by the end of this month Western Alaska will see the first glimmers of spring. Nome begins March with less than ten hours of daylight, which will grow to more than thirteen hours by month’s end. Slowly but surely, the day will quite literally conquer the night.
Sometimes our spiritual journey is punctuated by grandiose moments of grace, like the Gospel stories we will hear this month. More often, it feels like a tiresome slog where the days blend together, no end is in sight, and our patience is stretched to the breaking point. Either way, Christ is always there alongside us, and the Resurrection awaits after an entire Lent of prayer, sacrifice, and charity.
Thanks to your ever-present friendship and support, KNOM lives to accompany Western Alaskans through the drudgery of Lent, the drama and joy of Holy Week, and through every day of their lives. Thank you for being such a solid friend to KNOM and Western Alaska! Feel free to drop us a line if you would like to say hello, either by email at belong@knom.org or by phone at 907-868-1200.
