Lady Nanooks dominate in Cordova: Nanook Sports Minute

The Lady Nanooks are back in form after a dominating run at the Cordova Tipoff. That and more is in this week's Nanook Sports Minute, brought to you by Q-Trucking and Quality Auto Parts.

We'll get to the boys in a minute, first, some respect for the Lady Nanooks. They had a rocky start to the season, but bounced back in a really big way in Cordova over the weekend. Thursday, the team picked up a win over the host team, 46-38. Alora Stasenko put up 17 points and Benny Lie in her first game back with the team put up 10.

On Friday the girls picked up another win, this time a big one over Redington, 59-20. Sage Gregg led the team with 18 points, including three three pointers. And as if they still had something to prove, the Lady Nanooks capped off the tournament with a 70-24 win over Akiachak.

The three wins earned them the first place trophy, plus Sage Gregg Luella, Tumulak, Alora Stasenko and Benny Lie were all named to the all-tourney team. Oh, and they got the Sportsmanship Award too.

The boys meanwhile took part in the South Tourney hosted by South Anchorage, first facing off against Valdez, who they had just played the weekend before. This time, the result was no different, another win for the Nanooks this time 76-43. That win margin, by the way, was almost double the weekend before.

With a bonus day of rest after some icy roads delayed the tournament, the boys next faced off against Lathrop in the semifinals. Levi Pederson led the way with 21 points in the 59-56 win over the Malemutes.

On the other side of the bracket, Barrow fell to South Anchorage, setting up a championship match with the host team, Wolverines. Lane Schuerch kept the buckets coming with a team high 17 points. Cohen Booth also picked up 13, and Kevin Ongtowasruk knocked down two three pointers in the fourth quarter to keep the Nanooks in the game.

But it wasn't quite enough to topple the 4A Wolverines, with the Nanooks losing 55-60. Lane, Cohen and Levi were all named to the all-tournament team.

Both teams are back in action this week for the Ruckus at the Rec. That's at the Nome Recreation Center, which is right here in town, so if you can walk there, there's no excuses, show up, be loud, and we'll see you there. We'll see you in the next Nanook Sports Minute, brought to you by Q-Trucking and Quality Auto Parts.
