Dear Friend…(January 2026)

Western Alaska winters are certainly not for the faint of heart. Bitter cold, blustery snowstorms, and twenty-hour nights are a test of endurance for anyone. But even amid the harsh winter clime, there is beauty to be found: breathtaking sunsets over the frozen Bering Sea darken the sky to set the stage for the aurora borealis to dance overhead. Precisely in this darkest time of the year we celebrate the birth of Christ, the Light of the World. Imperceptibly at first, the days begin to grow longer and a new year ushers in boundless possibilities, just as the Son of God was born in the most unassuming of circumstances, but brings us very real hope of salvation.

Despite what the world would have us believe, for Catholics the Christmas season continues well into January. On January 1st the Church invites us to entrust the new year to Mary’s loving maternal care, and notably the feast of the Epiphany teaches us that Jesus is born for everyone in every age, from Judaea in the first century to Western Alaska in the twenty-first. KNOM Radio has been working tirelessly since 1971 to bring that joy, hope, and companionship to everyone in Western Alaska. Every day, waves of friendship and positivity are beamed into thousands of households across the tundra.

This priceless work would be impossible without your steadfast support. Thank you profoundly for being a friend and companion to KNOM and Western Alaska! Feel free to say hello whenever you like; you can write to us at belong@knom.org or call us at 907-868-1200. We would love to talk to you! Happy New Year!
