HomePlate Apartments remains full as demand for housing grows in Nome

Since opening in fall 2023, Nome’s HomePlate Apartments has remained full, reflecting the city’s urgent need for housing. The 15-unit complex, managed by the Nome Community Center, follows a “housing-first” model with private bedrooms, kitchenettes, and community space, along with in-house support. Manager Ida Booshu says demand is constant, with a long waitlist and daily inquiries. A recent city study confirmed housing is the top community improvement priority, yet the crisis continues. Nome’s homeless population doubled last year, and shelter demand has not eased.

Residents at HomePlate pay rent, follow minimal rules, and receive support through partnerships with local health and legal service providers. Monthly community dinners and cultural activities foster connection and healing, while some early tenants have already transitioned to permanent housing outside Nome. Booshu says the program is still young, but she remains hopeful: “We have yet to see major results, but I have faith.”
