Aug 21: Rick Thoman’s Climate Highlight for Western Alaska

The 2024 State of the Climate report was recently published by the American Meteorological Society. This is the 35th annual report issued by the society. Several other organizations issue global climate reviews, but this one and NOAA's Arctic Report Card are the only two that delve into the Arctic in detail.

Now for Alaska, some of the highlights from 2024 included record high permafrost temperatures at some North Slope and Brooks Range locations. Tundra greenness, one of the most dramatic changes over the last 50 years in the Arctic was near record high levels on the North Slope, but not quite as high on the Seward Peninsula and in southwest Alaska.

And in a less frequently presented analysis, discharge on Arctic rivers in both Eurasia and North America is increasing with a shift of one to two weeks earlier in the peak of spring flow following snow pack melt.
