A new self-storage facility is coming to Nome, with plans to open later this month. Longtime resident Aaron Burmeister is behind the development, which aims to meet a growing need for secure, dry storage space.
The facility is located next to the Nome City Field airport and was purchased by Burmeister and his wife, Amanda Burmeister, in 2024. The site is being developed under a new company the duo co-owns called Burmeister Leasing and Landscaping, LLC.
Burmeister said the idea for the business came directly from community feedback.
“People have been calling me for years, ‘hey, can we put a conex over here? Do you have dry storage?’ It came from the need,” Burmeister said.
The lot was previously owned by a subsidiary of Bering Straits Native Corporation and sold to Burmeister in July 2024. As soon as the transaction closed, Burmeister said he ordered 40 new conexes for the facility and said he envisions adding more in the future. When complete, a fence with a locking gate will wrap around the property.
“There’s a very big investment into the field, the clearing of that land, filling those lots and purchasing 40 conexes,” Burmeister said.
The containers measure 7.9’ x 7.7’ x 19.4’ on the inside, or about 1,180 cubic feet. Burmeister said customers will provide their own locks to the units. While the site has not yet been widely advertised, Burmeister said some units have already been leased out and that he plans to be done with construction by the end of July.
Burmeister Leasing will offer both month-to-month and annual rental options, with a reduced rate available for customers on the annual plan. While exact pricing has not yet been finalized, Burmeister said the rates will be competitive with similar facilities in Anchorage and Fairbanks.
