Pianist Roman Rudnytsky Performs in Nome

World-traveling classical pianist Roman Rudnytsky returned to Nome to perform at the Mini Convention Center. Rudnytsky is an American pianist with Ukrainian roots and is known around the world for his music. He has performed in more than 100 countries. While in Nome, he also visited both main campuses of Nome Public Schools to share his talents with students.

“I think it’s very important to do this for students,” Rudnytsky said. “Most of them have hardly heard a live classical performance of any kind … you never know — some kid might go home and ask their parents to learn an instrument because of something they heard.”

The concert in Nome included music by famous composers like Bach, Chopin, Horowitz, and Rachmaninoff.

Rudnytsky graduated from the Juilliard School in New York City and spent 40 years teaching at the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University in Ohio, where he still lives. His teaching style is informal and focused on learning through live performances.

“I always say a few words so the audience gets a little bit of background as to what they’re hearing,” he said. “That’s the professor in me.”
