The Nome-Beltz High School Drama Club is cooking up their spring play, with performances scheduled later this week. The club’s director, Rachel Finney, said the play melds her students’ interests with a little dose of practicality.
“This play is the perfect mix of a little bit of Shakespeare with that little bit of a challenge for them,” Finney said. “But it's still a comedy, which comedies are great because they're quite forgiving.”
The play, “I Hate Shakespeare” offers a mix of roles that appeal to students with lots of experience on stage and none at all. Finney said it’ll be fun for a diverse audience too.
“You're going to see familiar faces like Romeo and Juliet, but they all have this little comedic twist,” Finney said. “There's witches and magic with the Macbeth scene and then there's silly stuff. We've got a Jerry Springer episode and the dating game with Jim Lange.”
Though it’s a lot of work outside the school day, Finney finds motivation in promoting an opportunity that appeals to a diverse group of students.
“I think drama club is so cool because I've got kids of all grade levels, who have completely different interests, coming together for a play. Every practice I leave with a smile on my face because the kids are just having fun,” Finney said.
The drama club will perform “I Hate Shakespeare” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at the Nome Elementary School Commons.
