KNOM earns 4 awards for excellence in journalism

At the Alaska Press Club Awards Celebration Saturday, KNOM Radio Mission earned four awards for excellence in journalism.

  • First Place- Best Feature Photo (Ben Townsend)
  • Second Place- Best Portrait (Ben Townsend)
  • Second Place- Best Multimedia Presentation (Ben Townsend)
  • Third Place- Best Social Media Presence (Ben Townsend, Janice Homekingkeo, Miranda Musich)

The awards were selected by a panel of judges. All four awards given to KNOM were entered in the All Media category, for which submissions across print, digital, and radio organizations and individuals were received.

KNOM News Director, Ben Townsend, thanked the community for its support in his first year serving the role.

”Obviously we couldn’t do this without our community’s support. We’re incredibly proud to represent Nome and the Bering Strait region on a statewide stage,” Townsend said.

Two awards, Best Feature Photo (above) and Best Multimedia Presentation, were given for coverage related to the Stebbins School fire.

“I’m just grateful to the people of Stebbins for welcoming me and allowing me to help tell their story. This award is for them much more than it is for KNOM,” Townsend said.

KNOM General Manager, Miranda Musich, said the awards are the culmination of a year of growth across the KNOM organization.

“I am incredibly proud of the KNOM team and the hard work and dedication they’ve shown over the past year. The positive growth we’ve experienced — and the personal connections we’ve built with our donors, sponsors, listeners, and followers — are a direct reflection of the care and commitment our staff has for Western Alaska and all of our supporters. These awards are especially meaningful because they recognize, at a statewide level, the dedication and hard work of not only our news team but our entire KNOM staff,” Musich said.
