Maundy Thursday, also called Holy Thursday, will be on April 17th this year. On this special day, we remember The Last Supper, the washing of the disciples’ feet, and the beginning of Christ’s Passion.
For hundreds of years, the ceremonial foot washing took place at the beautiful Basilica of St. John Lateran during the Holy Thursday Mass. But in 2013, just ten days after becoming pope, Pope Francis surprised the world by changing this tradition. Instead of performing the ritual at the basilica, he went to a prison outside Rome, where he humbly washed and kissed the feet of twelve prisoners—including two women and two Muslims.
This incredible act of humility and service showed the true meaning of Maundy Thursday and reminded us of Jesus’ commandment:
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another as I have loved you.” (John 13:34)
As we pray for Pope Francis’ health, we also thank him for showing us how to be humble, to serve others, and to treat everyone with kindness.
At KNOM Radio Mission, we are honored to serve the people of Western Alaska, bringing hope, faith, and connection to even the most remote villages. We hold you in our prayers and want you to know how grateful we are for your loyal friendship. We would love to hear from you!
