The Lady Nanooks received the special honor of wearing game-worn NBA warm ups from Craig McConnell’s personal collection at the weekend's Husky Shootout.
The Lady Nanooks' Coach, Tracy Gregg, said the team asked McConnell for the opportunity before their game.
“At halftime of the boys game, we went into a room where he had them all laid out, and then he kind of gave the backstory to all of them, and just kind of let them pick which one they wanted to wear," Gregg said.
The girls went 4-0 over the weekend with KJ West and Alora Stasenko making the all-tourney team. At the halfway point of the season, Coach Gregg says they’re well on their way to meeting their goal of two wins at the regional tournament. Those two wins would punch them a ticket to state.
“They're really buying into what we're trying to create, right, which is a competitive program, they're raising the bar every single time. What can we do now? What can we do next? They're never satisfied," Gregg said.
The boys team also put on a show with wins against North Pole and Point Hope, but it was the game against Kotzebue that etched the 2025 team in the history books. The Nanooks put up a school record 106 points against the Huskies, besting them by a final score of 58-106.
Both teams took home a commemorative plaque as tournament champions, and were joined by seven members of the cheer team.
This weekend the two teams are housing the Houston Hawks for the annual “Ruckus at the Rec”. That’s taking place right here in downtown Nome at the Recreation Center with the first game kicking off at 5:00 Friday night.
