40 middle schoolers suited up in Nanook blue for a series of volleyball games over the weekend. High school players Kailey Hensley and Sherilyn Anderson stepped in to help with coaching while Coach Krystal Hensley reffed.
Coach Hensley said they plan to take three teams to the Glenallen Sweetheart Tournament in mid-February.
The Nanooks took on the Unalakleet Wolfpack for the second and third time this month. Their first match at the Subway Showdown two weeks ago ended with a Nome-Beltz win, 64-45. Over the weekend they once against hosted Unalakleet for a pair of matches.
Friday’s match ended in a similar score of 67 to 46, with Cohen Booth leading the scoresheet with 21 points. Kevin Ongtowasruk put up 12.
Saturday’s match ended with a score of 60-31. Finn Gregg, Booth, and Kendall Ulroan led the scoresheet with 14, 12, and 10 points each.
The Lady Nanooks headed back to Unalakleet for the second week in a row. After falling to Nome-Beltz in the final of the Christopher Lockwood Memorial Tournament last weekend, the Lady Wolfpack bounced back with a 35-38 win.
The two teams cranked it up Saturday with a high-energy 122 point game. The game went into overtime and it was the Lady Wolfpack that persevered 59-63. KJ West, BrookLynn Crowe, Benny Lie, and Wookie Nichols all put up double digit points in the narrow defeat.
The basketball teams are headed up to Kotzebue this weekend for the Husky Shootout.
