Sleigh Ride

The Dominican friars in Anchorage premiered the documentary “Sleigh Ride: Christmas in the Last Frontier” in December. The film tells the story of two Dominican friars starting from Holy Family Cathedral in Anchorage and trekking over 500 miles on Christmas Eve through snow, wind, and ice to celebrate Mass in three remote communities: Trapper Creek, Talkeetna, and Glenallen. For over 30 years, the Dominicans have affectionately called the journey “the sleigh ride,” although the sleigh they use happens to be a Subaru. The documentary can be found on the OPWest YouTube channel.

KNOM Radio Mission plays a crucial role in serving the people of Western Alaska, an area that is isolated and not connected to the road system, making travel difficult and infrequent. This makes KNOM’s mission even more vital, especially during the holiday season. For many remote parishes, it can be a year or more between visits from a priest due to the logistical challenges posed by the region’s vast distances, harsh weather conditions, and lack of transportation infrastructure.

In response, KNOM broadcasts Christmas Mass to these remote communities, allowing residents to celebrate and experience the spiritual significance of the holiday, even if they are unable to have a priest present.

This service is a lifeline for people in these isolated areas, offering a sense of connection to the broader Catholic community and helping to maintain traditions and faith despite the challenges of their environment.

KNOM’s ability to broadcast these Masses reflects the station’s commitment to bringing both spiritual and community support to people in need. It is a powerful example of how the radio can bridge distances, creating a sense of unity and belonging even in the most remote and isolated places.
