Nome’s Christmas celebrations began with its Christmas Extravaganza in early December. The community gathered in Old St. Joseph’s Hall for the fun-filled event.
With Nome mayor John Handeland serving as master of ceremonies, several community members shared their talents. Several music groups, including the choir and the bell choir from Nome’s Covenant Church, performed Christmas carols. A dance team from Nome’s King Island native community shared a traditional native dance, and a group of children in costume acted out the Nativity story while one of them read the account of Jesus’ birth from the Gospel. A local quartet called Landbridge Tollbooth performed their rendition of “No Place Like Nome for the Holidays,” and to top off the evening, Santa Claus made an appearance, and every child had the opportunity to tell him what they wanted for Christmas.
KNOM was present to livestream the event for anyone unable to attend in person. For anyone who wishes to watch it, the video of the livestream can be found on KNOM’s YouTube channel.
