The Capitol Christmas Tree, dubbed Spruce Wayne, arrived in Washington from Alaska in early December. The honor of lighting it was awarded to Rose Burke, a fourth grader from the Kenai Peninsula, after she won an essay contest in October. In her essay, Burke spoke about Alaska’s natural beauty and wildlife, stating notably, “When they see this majestic Christmas tree they will be reminded of our farthest north state. Though far away, we are united in love for our country.”
