Two distinguished Alaskans were celebrated for their exceptional service at the 2024 Alaska Federation of Natives Conference. Marlene Haugen of Unalakleet received the Eileen Panigeo MacLean Education Award for her five decades of dedication to the Unalakleet School. Barret Eningowuk of Shishmaref was honored with the Glenn Godfrey Law Enforcement Award for his outstanding work as a Village Public Safety Officer.
Haugen, who has taught three generations of students including members of her own family, is known for her engaging teaching style and willingness to connect with students through creative methods.
Eningowuk, recently promoted to First Sergeant, becomes the second Western Alaskan in three years to receive the prestigious Glenn Godfrey award. In his acceptance speech, the 37-year-old VPSO acknowledged the sacrifices his 13-year career has required, particularly thanking his wife for her support through numerous missed family moments and holidays.
The awards, named after influential Alaskan leaders Eileen Panigeo MacLean and Colonel Glenn Godfrey, recognize outstanding contributions to education and law enforcement in Alaska Native communities.
