Nanook Sports Minute: Nov 18

We’ve got middle school basketball and high school wrestling in this week’s Nanook Sports Minute.

Starting with basketball, the boys and girls teams as well as the cheer squad headed to Valdez for the Valdez Invitational.

The varsity girls ended up with an 0-2 record and the JV team earned a 1-2 record. Brittney Payenna and Piper Lewis were bright spots for the young Lady Nanooks, as each took home All-Tournament honors.

The boys’ JV team finished 1-2 with a win against Glenallen. Varsity boys went undefeated at the tournament and earned first place with Athen Contreras being named to the All Tournament team and Rowan Moore picking up the tournament MVP award.

The cheer squad was in action all weekend cheering on all four teams. Ivy Bahnke was named Most Spirited and Nevelo Hoogendorn earned the Most Cheer Leadership award.

Over in wrestling, the Nanooks were a little dinged up and took a limited team to the Lancer Smith Memorial tournament in Wasilla, one of the biggest in the state.

Wyatt Ahmasuk, Treydon Thomas, Ben Milton, Young Erikson, and Renee Brown competed in the meet but it was Renee that stood out on the statewide-stage. She finished in fourth at the tournament that often draws over 1,000 competitors.

The team will be back in action this weekend at Kotzebue’s Bush Brawl tournament. We’ll have coverage from that meet in next week’s Nanook Sports Minute.
