KNOM Community Calendar: Nov 18

Here’s what’s coming up this week on the KNOM Community Calendar:

As the community gets prepared for high school basketball season, so too is a planning committee for the Western Conference Tournament. The regional tournament cycles through various communities, and this year it’s Nome’s turn. Parents and volunteers are encouraged to attend at 6:00 p.m. at the middle school commons area. Just before that, a meeting for parents of the girls basketball teams will start at 5:15 p.m.

Also Monday night, seniors from Nome-Beltz will be out and about collecting donations for their food drive fundraiser. The funds will be used for a trip to DC that they missed out on due to COVID.

This week Norton Sound Health Corporation is putting on a few events for Diabetes Awareness Week, starting with free health screenings Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday, the community is invited to wear blue and submit photos for a chance to win prizes.

Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. the library is hosting a preschool story hour with stories, playtime, and craftmaking.

Wednesday night there will be a Strait Science webinar featuring the Marine Mammal Commission (MMC). They're the oversight agency for marine mammal research and management activities nationwide. That starts at 6:30 p.m. on Zoom.

This weekend the middle school basketball team will host Valdez and Kotzebue at the Nome-Beltz gym and the wrestling team will travel up to Kotzebue for the Bush Brawl.

Saturday night the Nome Arts Council is putting on an open mic night down at the Mini Convention Center, that starts at 6:30 p.m. and admission is $5.

And finally, peeking into next week there will be a City Council meeting on Monday, the first in a month. We’ll have live coverage of the meeting on our Facebook and YouTube page.
