Marlene Haugen, a dedicated educator with a half-century of service to the Unalakleet School, has been awarded the prestigious Eileen Panigeo MacLean Education Award. The award recognizes Alaska Native individuals who have demonstrated strong commitment, competence, and sensitivity in the education field, making a lasting impact on Alaska Native students.
Haugen has poured her heart and soul into the students of Unalakleet for over 50 years. She’s known for her enthusiasm and not being afraid to dress up, sing, or act silly to connect with her students.
While accepting the award at the 2024 Alaska Federation of Native’s Conference, Haugen held back tears as she reflected on a career that spanned generations.
“I've done three generations, including my own family. My mom worked in the school, now my granddaughter is in the classroom where I was,” Haugen said.
Bering Straits Native Corporation President, Cindy Massie, then shared the lasting impact that Haugen will have on the community of Unalakleet.
“I've seen her not only in the classroom, but after school at all the kids' activities, and I've seen her scold them after school in public, but all those kids just run to her and hug her,” Massie said. “It's truly an honor to recognize you, and I strongly want to say that she has made a difference in our children, on our future ancestors.”
