Inmate at AMCC Found with Contraband

On September 3 authorities at the Anvil Mountain Correctional Center (AMCC) notified the Nome Statewide Drug Enforcement Unit (SDEU) of a contraband discovery involving an inmate.

27 year old Arthur Kobuk of Saint Michael was observed expelling balloons from his rectum while held in a dry-cell, a type of cell used to monitor inmates suspected of smuggling in contraband.

Upon responding to the incident, officers from the Nome SDEU confiscated nine balloons from Kobuk. These balloons contained 18.2 grams of marijuana bud, 26.8 grams of marijuana concentrate, and 6.3 grams of tobacco. According to the Department of Public Safety, the total estimated street value of the controlled substances within AMCC is approximately $7,180.

Kobuk was charged with Promoting Contraband 1st Degree, Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance (MICS) 3rd Degree, MICS 5th Degree, and Promoting Contraband 2nd Degree

Kobuk was remanded on the new charges while continuing his current sentence.
