At its September 10 meeting, the Nome Common Council approved an employment agreement for Brooks Chandler to serve as the city’s Interim City Manager.
Chandler, who first became a member of the Alaska State Bar over 40 years ago, specialized in municipal law throughout his career. The Girdwood resident and former attorney for the City of Nome is set to begin his role on September 16.
Chandler’s compensation will include a weekly salary of $4,000. He will also be provided with an apartment leased by the city, 10 days of personal leave, and moving expenses and return transportation equal to the price of four round trip tickets between Anchorage and Nome.
Chandler will not receive health insurance or retirement benefits but will have access to a city-provided vehicle, laptop, and cell phone during his tenure.
The decision to appoint Chandler as the interim city manager comes after the departure of Glenn Steckman, who served his last day with the city on September 1. Chandler will be tasked with managing city operations and assisting in the search for a permanent city manager. His employment will continue through December 16, or until a permanent hire is found.
Mayor John Handeland said at the Common Council meeting that they intend to open a request for proposal from executive search firms to assist with the search.
