Gambell Man Arrested After Officer-Involved Shooting

Alaska State Troopers arrested a Gambell man Friday following an officer-involved shooting while serving an arrest warrant.

According to a dispatch report, troopers arrived at a residence in Gambell at approximately 12:50 p.m. to serve a warrant on 46-year-old Vaughn Walunga, who was wanted for Terroristic Threatening in the Second Degree.

Upon their arrival, the officers reportedly announced their presence from outside the residence. Walunga responded by firing a gunshot through the front door, prompting the officers to return fire.

Walunga was struck in the hand and was subsequently taken into custody. Troopers immediately administered first aid, and Walunga was transported to the local clinic for further treatment. No other injuries were reported.

The Alaska Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case and is currently conducting a thorough investigation. The investigation’s findings will be referred to the Office of Special Prosecutions for independent review.

In line with the Alaska Department of Public Safety’s policy, the names of the officers involved will be released after a mandatory 72-hour administrative leave.

Further charges against Walunga are expected.
