Operation Polar Dagger to Return to Nome Region

Special Operations Command North (SOCNORTH) will return to the Nome region August 15-25 for the second phase of Operation Polar Dagger. The operation will take place in and around Nome, Wales, and Tin City.

Operation Polar Dagger is designed to showcase the rapid deployment capabilities of U.S. Special Operations Forces (SOF) in the Alaskan Arctic. Phase one of the operation concluded on August 2 with heavy activity on and around Saint Lawrence Island. Phase two will focus on mainland Alaska. 

During this phase, U.S. SOF will train on various operations including infiltration and exfiltration missions, long-range movements, and air-to-ground integration. The exercise will also focus on the defense of critical infrastructure, rapid resupply operations, low-level navigation, and domain awareness activities.

The following commands and units will support Operation Polar Dagger:

  • Special Operations Command North, Peterson SFB, CO
  • A detachment and command element from 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Carson, CO
  • Members from the 92nd Civil Affairs Battalion, Fort Liberty, NC
  • 492nd Special Operations Wing, Hurlburt Field, FL
  • 23rd Special Operations Weather Squadron, Hurlburt Field, FL
  • U.S. Army Audiovisual Specialists, Fort Liberty, NC
  • Alaska Army National Guard, 207th Aviation Regiment

Operation Polar Dagger has trained SOF in the sub-arctic and arctic since 2021. 

Residents in Nome, Wales, and Tin City can expect to see heightened military activity as the operation unfolds.
