The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) Division of Wildlife Conservation has implemented a new resident bag limit for the Western Arctic Caribou Herd, effective July 1, 2024.
The new regulations permit the harvest of up to 15 caribou per regulatory year, with only one being a cow. This change applies throughout the entire range of the Western Arctic Herd, encompassing all of Units 22 and 23, as well as the southwestern portion of Unit 26A, which includes Wainwright and Point Lay.
While there is no closed season for bulls, hunters should be aware that the harvest of cows is restricted in certain locations during specific periods. It is crucial for hunters to review the regulations pertinent to their hunting unit to ensure compliance.

Permits required for the harvest under these new regulations are available through specific channels. For those hunting in Unit 22, RC800 permits are available at the ADF&G office in Nome or from local license vendors.
RC907 permits can be obtained from ADF&G offices in Kotzebue and Utqiaġvik, or from license vendors within Units 23 and 26A.
