There are two candidates for seat C of the Bering Strait Regional Educational Attendance Area board: incumbent Winfred Olanna Jr. and newcomer Marcus Barr. Both men are from Brevig Mission.
Olanna’s focus is on teachers.
“Teacher housing, that’s a big issue in the district, along with teachers. We’re always recruiting for new teachers or more teachers,” Olanna said.
Barr agreed that teacher housing is an important issue for the REAA board to address.
“(We should be) trying to get funding for new teacher housing,” Barr said.
Both candidates also agreed that the board has been handling COVID-19 precautions well so far.
Olanna has served on the REAA board for the past three years. Barr said while he would be new to the board, he’s ready to learn from the more experienced board members.
The REAA election takes place Oct. 5, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
