The Nome Nanook basketball season started late last month with a varsity exhibition game versus Redington. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams played, with the boys’ team taking home a win to start their season.
Pat Callahan, the coach for the boys’ basketball team, and Nome-Beltz activities director, says that he speculated they would barely have enough players to take the court.
“We thought we were only going to suit up five guys – we actually, I think, we suited up six guys. We fouled one guy out, ended up with five. Thought we might get down to playing three or four guys towards the end of that game.”

Regardless of numbers, one Nome player had a record-setting day according to Callahan.
“Dawson Schaeffer scored 42 points in that game, which matched the school record.”

The Nanook boys would go on to win 85-52.
On the girls side, the final score was 48-43 in favor of Redington. Brooke Anungazuk led the Nanooks with 18 points. Lady Nanooks coach Joe Musich did not return a request for comment before the airing of this story.
As the basketball season is underway, Nome-Beltz basketball will be hosting the Subway Showdown today, Friday, and Saturday with Soldotna, Unalakleet, and conference rival Kotzebue coming into town.
