The Shishmaref Northern Lights boys’ and girls’ basketball teams walked away champions of the Bering Sea Bash regional basketball tournament last weekend.

The conference ran daily from February 26-March 2 in Unalakleet. Twelve schools from across the region were represented, including Stebbins, White Mountain, Gambell, and St. Michael.

Following 13 games in a bloated bracket over the course of the week, Shaktoolik and Shishmaref went head-to-head for the championship games. In both, Shishmaref conquered their competition: Shish girls won 40-to-34, and boys won with 28 points over Shaktoolik.

At the conference’s conclusion, players from across different teams were awarded for their performances. White Mountain’s Felicia Ione and Koyuk’s Leo Charles were both free throw contest champions. Three-point contest winners were Shishmaref’s Brad Sinnok and Shaktoolik’s Allyson Takak. And the winners of the skills contest were Emma Nakak, from St. Michael, and Eric Daniels, Jr., from Elim.

If you missed any of the action and would like to view the conference games or awards, the Bering Strait School District student broadcast team uploaded footage of the tournament online.
