City Council Will Discuss Tariffs and Public Safety

It’s a short agenda tonight for the Nome City Council’s regular meeting (on Monday, Feb. 25). Two new ordinances will be introduced, regarding a proposed tariff change for the Port of Nome and the creation of a public safety committee.

Port of Nome tariff #15 is meant to replace all other existing tariffs for the port, meaning that it includes new policies for operation and some rate changes and updates some existing language from the current tariff. Under the new tariff, there would be limited use of the causeway for inner harbor docking permit holders. If the changes are approved, home-ported vessels would have the option of obtaining a causeway docking permit, and vessels over 50 feet would be required to have written plans for launch and haul-out.

Nome’s City Council will also discuss the proposed draft for the public safety commission tonight. That draft was written by city attorney Brooks Chandler and was introduced for discussion in a public meeting last week.

The council will also hear a second reading of an amendment that would allow a State of Alaska commercial driver’s license to qualify for the minimum health requirements of a city chauffeur license.

The meeting tonight is open to the public as usual, and citizens can speak during public comments. The Nome City Council will convene in the council chambers at City Hall at 7pm, Monday, February 25.
