A new ordinance on alcohol sales and oaths of office are on the agenda for Monday night’s Nome City Council meeting.
The council will hear a resolution for an ordinance requiring a valid ID for all alcohol sales in the city. If passed, presenting an ID would be necessary each time alcohol is purchased in Nome, regardless of conditions such as the perceived age of the buyer or whether the buyer is known to the bartender or store clerk. This comes as part of an effort to curb underage drinking and enforce probations for those who are ineligible to consume alcohol. Any liquor store, bar, or restaurant found in non-compliance would face a fine.
The Council will also hear a resolution to appoint John Handeland as the interim City Manager, and Jennifer Reader and Meghan Topkok will be sworn into the City Council at the start of tonight’s meeting.
The council will host a work session immediately preceding the meeting to discuss the duties and parameters of the Ad Hoc Public Safety Committee. The regular session will begin at 7pm in Nome City Chambers.
