Road Proposal and Liquor Retail Limits Are on Nome Council’s Agenda

A new road to Nome and limits on local alcohol sales are among the items the Nome City Council will consider during its meeting on Sept. 24.

At their previous meeting, the council discussed an ordinance that would limit alcohol sales in liquor stores to between the hours of 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. for any store south of Front Street. This is part of an effort to limit public intoxication downtown. Also included in this ordinance is a ban on the sale of distilled spirits sold in containers smaller than one liter. If this ordinance passes the second reading tonight, it will be put on the ballot for citizens to vote in the October municipal election.

The Council will also be having a second reading on a resolution that would allow for a private access industrial road from the Ambler Mining District to Nome. This would allow for supplies to be trafficked between Ambler and the Port of Nome. The exact route of this road is not yet decided. That resolution is up for its final reading and passage tonight.

Also on the agenda, the council will hear a second reading of an ordinance that would authorize liens to secure overdue utility charges. When a property is sold, if there are overdue utility fees, the city would be able to garner that money under this ordinance. The city will also hear a second reading for an ordinance that would provide a procedure for the distraint and sale of personal property.

The meeting will begin at 7pm Monday night at Nome City Council Chambers.
