The Alaska National Guard hosted a conference last week to continue discussions of the military’s role in environmental security.
The Pacific Environmental Security Forum brings together militaries from the Indo-Asia-Pacific region to collaborate on improving environmental security, protection, and management. The main focus of the PESF is to improve gaps in methods used across military and national lines, as well as to identify successful activities.
Militaries also work with civilian organizations to help improve best practices for supporting the environment.
Twenty-four countries attended the 2017 event, held in Anchorage. Topics of interest this year included environmental considerations and their relation to military, climate change, and water security, as well as energy and biodiversity protection.
The PESF was started in 2010 and is organized by the U.S. Pacific Command.
