For weeks, we trained. We practiced saying mushers’ names and printed out example leaderboards. We tested the walkie-talkies and drove out to the trail crossing. We learned the best way of sticking toe warmers onto our wool socks. And we bought bottled Starbucks Frappuccinos.
But in the end, when we were reporting live from the finish line under the arch, we had to improvise. We had to fill the air time with interviews, color commentary, and all the sounds that surrounded us in that chute. Sometimes, we made radio magic. Other times, we made radio… whatever the opposite of magic is.
In this week’s audio blog, we’re embracing our live reports, faults and all. Each volunteer selected a small excerpt to include in the blog. This way, if you weren’t in Nome, you can hear a little bit of what it’s like to witness an Iditarod finish. And if you are from Nome, you can reminisce about your favorite Iditarod moments, and about your favorite reporter blunders.
So enjoy this audio blog, and as Davis liked to say during his live race updates, “Keep calm and mush on.”
