FOR THIS MONTH’S EPISODE OF DEAREST ALASKA, we’re getting a behind-the-scenes look at the development of a digital game application for smart electronic devices by the National Park Service.
Users of the game will get to travel through the Bering Land Bridge National Preserve in the dead of winter, attempting to survive through to spring. The catch? Alongside game developers, artists, coders, and gaming engineers cooperating with the National Park Service, Ranger Lupe Zaragoza decided to take some of the crucial brainstorming and planning sessions straight to the kids of Nome Public Schools.
We’ll meet the six sixth-graders involved with game development, as well as Ranger Zaragoza, as she explains and shows how local children’s creativity and knowledge will help add color and flavor to the app, which is planned to roll out in beta and then in playable form later in 2017.
Dearest Alaska is an experimental audio project; the program will be available on this website and broadcast live on the first Saturday and Sunday of every month at 12noon and 5pm on KNOM (96.1 FM, 780 AM).
