A fire near White Mountain late last week burned almost 15 acres of land. The fire occurred at a cabin of a White Mountain resident, 8 miles upriver from the community.
Alaska State Troopers received a report of the fire on July 14th at 8:30pm. The Village Public Safety Officer from White Mountain responded to the scene by boat and found the cabin, nearby trees, and tundra engulfed in flames.
The White Mountain Volunteer Fire Department arrived on-scene and put out the fire using hoses, portable pumps, and shovels. A bucket brigade was also used for flames that had jumped an estimated ¼ mile away, preventing further spread to the community of Council.
No injuries were reported in the fire.
Troopers state the incident was started when a campfire was left without being fully extinguished. Damages are expected to cost near $15,000.
