Nome, AK — Alaska State Troopers have suspended their search for a missing Nome hiker. 36-year-old Joseph Balderas has been reported missing since June 27th.
According to an AST dispatch, Troopers announced an end to their active, seven-day search on July 4th, citing lack of evidence indicating Balderas’ whereabouts.
A multitude of organizations and volunteers have assisted in the search and rescue so far, including the U.S. Coast Guard, Nome Search and Rescue, National Park Service, City of Nome, Civil Air Patrol, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Alaska Court System, and others. Dog teams from both Fairbanks PAWS and MAT SAR also flew to Nome to join in the efforts.
Troopers state the active search is suspended “pending any new leads.”
