Nome, Alaska– A Norwegian tanker ran aground near Nunivak Island last week.
According to a US Coast Guard press release, the chemical tanker was carrying over 14 million gallons of fuel when it hit bottom at 9:24 a.m. Friday.
The 24-member crew was able to refloat the vessel minutes after the grounding and anchored in deeper waters.
While the crew saw no initial signs of a spill, the Coast Guard sent a C-130 Hercules airplane from Kodiak. The fly-over confirmed no visible pollution from the grounding.
According to the Coast Guard, the weather at the time of the incident was calm with 3-foot seas.
