Nome, Alaska— Six walrus hunters were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard near Shishmaref Wednesday.
The rescue occurred about four miles north of Singeak early Wednesday morning after two 22-foot skiffs had run into trouble.
According to a Coast Guard release, an Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew hoisted up three boaters from one skiff after it had been cut off from open water by ice. The three other boaters were picked up from their beached skiff on land nearby.
The Coast Guard had been notified of the two stranded skiffs Tuesday afternoon by Alaska State Troopers after communication had been lost with the hunters.
All six hunters were returned safely to the community of Shishmaref Wednesday morning.
