The 2016 Arctic Winter Games are over, and Team Alaska beat all eight competitors with a total of 216 medals. That’s more than double the honors of second-place Team Yukon.
The weeklong international tournament ended Friday in Nuuk, Greenland. On the final day of competition, athletes from Nome and Unalakleet earned six medals.
Makiyan Jay Ivanoff of Unalakleet took gold in Open Men’s One-Foot High Kick. He never missed the ball, beating more than 20 competitors with a height of 9 feet, 2 inches.
Nick Hanson of Unalakleet won the bronze medal in Open Men’s Knuckle Hop with a distance of 137 feet, 6 inches.
Four Nome competitors medaled in the Pole Push team event of the Dene Games. Tim James and Zach Tozier won bronze medals in Junior Men’s Pole Push. Kim Clark took silver in the Junior Women’s competition, and Drew Dewberry earned bronze in Open Men’s event.
While Team Alaska finished in first place overall, Team Yukon came in second with 100 medals and Team Alberta North finished third with 88 medals.
The next Arctic Winter Games will be held in 2018 in the South Slave Region of Canada’s Northwest Territories.
