At McGrath’s Iditarod Auction, Some “Silly Prizes,” But Serious Results

Snow machines buzz by McGuire’s pub in McGrath all night, and a small group lingers outside, smoking cigarettes, but inside, a large crowd swigs beer as they toss quarters into coffee cans.

This is McGrath’s annual Chinese auction. It’s a fundraiser event the community hosts every year, when the Iditarod comes through the small, Kuskokwim River community, to raise money for a local organization and a family in need.

On Tuesday night, we got a first hand look at what the auction is all about. Hear our “audio postcard” above.
