NOME, Alaska — Nome Public Schools has received 35 applications from prospective principals looking to replace Edwin “Chip” Sharpe as the head of Nome-Beltz Jr/Sr High. That’s according to Superintendent Shawn Arnold, who addressed the school board at Tuesday’s regular meeting.
Arnold said the district will create a committee next week to review applications. Meanwhile, he said the district is increasing the salary of John Berkeley, who was named interim principal after Sharpe resigned in December for family health reasons.
Berkeley has continued his role as director of federal programs in addition to his new principal duties. He will receive an extra 50 dollars a day for the rest of the school year.
Arnold also announced that Nome-Beltz’s assistant principal, Beth Sandefur, plans to leave at the end of the school year after one year with the district. Teacher Lucas Frost, who has taught in Nome for the four years, will replace her.
