For at least the third year in a row, Nome’s City Council is urging the state to fully fund Alaska’s Harbor Facility Grant Program. At last night’s meeting, the council unanimously passed a resolution supporting the grant as part of the 2017 state budget.
The grant was originally created to share the high cost of harbor repairs and improvements between municipal governments and the state. Despite the needed support in port communities such as Kodiak, Valdez, and Nome, the grant has only been fully funded twice in the last ten years.
The resolution approved by the council last night is part of their effort to secure a slice of that statewide grant for projects in Nome.
