KNOM Exchange: Tobacco in Western Alaska

The exchange for Sept. 24 has ended. Our discussion ranged from how and why people start using tobacco, to the effects of tobacco on individuals, families, and communities, to strategies and resources for quitting tobacco.

Our guests were:
Spruce Lynch, tobacco prevention specialist at the Nome Community Center
Julia Farris, tobacco prevention specialist at the Nome Community Center

We also had segments from a phone interview with Michelle Poust, tobacco cessation and prevention education for CAMP, as well as calls from Dr. Jodi Prochaska at Stanford University about the HEALTHH study and Sarah in Nome about her experience growing up in a tobacco-using household. Although we didn’t have time to read it on the air, Cherie in Nome also sent us a message about her personal struggles with trying to quit tobacco.

Here are some resources discussed on the show:

Dr. Jodi Prochaska’s “HEALTHH Study” is to learn more about treating tobacco use and heart disease risks in Alaska Native adults. Eligible participants  can receive up to $200 upon completion of the study. Contact HEALTHH staff at: (907) 310-4566 or hearthealthh@gmail.com

The CAMP departments Tobacco Quit Class meets Mondays at 12 and Wednesday at 5. The class has already started, but you can still join. If you wish to join from a village, all you need is a working phone number and email address. Call the CAMP department: at 443-3365 or email mepoust@nshcorp.org

The Alaska Tobacco Quit Line is a free and confidential service: 1-800-QUIT-NOW. 1-800-784-8669

This Thursday, Sept. 24, we’re talking about tobacco use in western Alaska on KNOM Exchange.

We invite you to call in and share your experience with tobacco. Here are some of the questions we’ll be discussing:

  • If you’re a smoker, how did you start smoking? Have you ever tried to quit?
  • If you’re not a smoker, what decisions or examples led to you saying “no” to tobacco in your life?
  • What kind of tobacco use do you see in your community–and what effects do you see as a result?

We’ll have guests Spruce Lynch and Julia Farris from the Nome Community Center’s tobacco prevention program join us in the studio on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 10:00 am.
