A Day in Shaktoolik, AK

I’m not in the news department, so I don’t really have a reason to travel. When asked to get on a bush plane for a project, I jump at any chance.

Spruce Lynch, a Tobacco Prevention Specialist at the Nome Community Center, spent the winter traveling to communities in our region, going to schools and teaching kids about smoking and tobacco cessation. Back in April, she asked me to join her and turn some of these lessons into PSAs to air on KNOM.

The following spots are a result of this trip. The first two were pre-written by Spruce, while the latter two were on-the-fly. We simply went around the room, asking kids why they should not smoke, and what they learned through their lessons with Spruce.

A huge thank you to the Nome Community Center and all the students in Shaktoolik who participated!
