A gathering of educators convened in Nome recently for the final workshop of iTREC!, or “Iditarod Trail to Every Classroom.” It’s a program that brings teachers and students out of the classroom for some real-life, hands-on learning—that, in the end, gives something back to the community.
Teachers from Seward to Nome, along the Iditarod Historic Trail, are getting ready to implement their projects back home. But according to Brian Mead from Colony High School in Palmer, the iTREC! program is about more than those individual projects.
“It’s not just one project that I’m doing—it’s a way of teaching to get kids some authentic experiences and let them learn some skills and then put those skills to work out in the community where they matter,” said Mead.
