Last weekend, Nome’s Varsity and JV basketball teams squared off against Eielson High School and Brevig Mission at home in the Beltz gym.
For the Varsity Boys, it was victory all around with a Friday night win of 68-27 over Eielson. Senior Klay Baker led with the game high of 24 points—his 8 three-point shots just shy the school record of 9 three-pointers. Before the game, a special ceremony recognized the senior boys: Emery Booshu, Klay Baker, Alex Gray, Michael Lyon, Daniel Head, Josh Gologergen, and Wink Winkelmann.
On Saturday afternoon, Nome’s Varsity Boys again bested Eielson High with a 52-32 victory, led by Klay Baker with 19 points. But the showstopper was 65-foot shot from the far free throw line. Alex Gray beat the halftime buzzer, rallying the crowd.
With the victories over Eielson, Nome’s season record improved to 16-3.
But for the Lady Nanooks, it was a tough game against Eielson on Friday night. The Eielson girls were 8 down at halftime, but came back to win 47-35 over Nome in the second half. Jillian Stettenbenz led Nome with 16 points. The Lady Nanooks again fell to Eielson Saturday afternoon 44-25. The Lady Nanooks will next face the Class 3A #1 ranked Barrow Lady Whalers on Friday and Saturday in Nome.
The Nome JV Girls and Boys also hosted Brevig Mission over the weekend. The Beltz JV Girls defeated Brevig twice, though the Nome Boys fell to Brevig in their two games.
This weekend, the Nome Junior High Boys will spar against Kotzebue Junior High, while the Lady Nanooks and Nome JV Girls will face Barrow.
